Establish a waste management system in return for a total ban on using coral for any building purpose, and extracting sand for any purpose for the duration of 10 years. (Alifushi Island, 2006)
Alifushi is a small island with a population of 2,100 people. Seacology will provide funds to equip 210 households with a garbage bin with four sections for all the different types of waste - food, plastic, glass and metals - and to provide 10 large four-sectioned collection containers to be placed in each district. Seacology will also purchase 10 bicycles with a cart attached for the collectors of the garbage. The biodegradable products will be composted and the non-biodegradable products will be sent to a facility which can manage that waste. In return, Alifushi islanders will make a total ban on collecting coral or using it for building purposes; they will also have a total ban on collecting sand from the beaches for making cement, both for a duration of 10 years.
Establish a waste management system in return for a total ban on using coral or extracting sand for any building purpose; and a total ban on killing turtles or harvesting turtle eggs, harvesting sea cucumbers, shark fishing or shark finning for a duration of 10 years. (Innamadhoo Island, 2006)
Innamaadhoo is a small island with a population of 724 people. There are two dumping sites where all types of waste are being dumped indiscriminately. Seacology will provide funds to equip 125 households with a garbage bin with four sections for all the different types of waste - food, plastic, glass and metals - and to provide seven large waste collection containers to be placed in each district. The project will also purchase three bicycles with a cart attached for the collectors of the garbage. In return, Innamaadhoo islanders will make a total ban on collecting coral or using it for building purposes, as well as a total ban on collecting sand from the beaches for making cement. They will also have a total ban for consuming turtle eggs, killing turtles, shark fishing and collecting sea cucumbers. These bans will be in effect for a minimum duration of 10 years.

Construction of a kindergarten in exchange for an agreement banning the harvest of sea turtle eggs (Kendhoo Island, 2003)
The Maldives is an island nation chain of some 1,200 small low-lying coral islands in the Indian Ocean, about 580 kilometers southwest of Sri Lanka. Eight years ago the government of the Maldives had the foresight to impose a ban on catching turtles in Maldivian waters. However, this ban did not cover the harvesting of eggs from the highly endangered sea turtles. Seacology, in cooperation with Four Seasons Resort, has provided a critically needed preschool for the island of Kendhoo in return for a ban on the taking of turtle eggs.
